Orthodontics: The key to a perfect smile

At Dr. Jelić Dental Clinic in Bijeljina, you can receive the most advanced orthodontic treatment that will make your smile brighter and more beautiful. We offer all types of modern orthodontic solutions in one place.

What Is Orthodontics?

Orthodontics is a branch of dentistry that deals with the diagnosis, prevention, and treatment of irregularities in the position of teeth and jaws. The main goal of orthodontics is to achieve optimal function and aesthetics of the mouth and face — improving not only the appearance of the smile but also overall oral health.
Orthodontists use various methods and appliances to correct bite irregularities (the relationship between the upper and lower teeth) and the alignment of teeth to achieve a functional and aesthetically pleasing smile.

Orthodontics employs different appliances and techniques to correct all orthodontic problems, including metal braces, ceramic braces, clear aligners, and retention devices.
Treatments can last from several months to a few years, depending on the severity of the issue and desired results.
In addition to aesthetic correction, orthodontics can improve oral function, chewing, and speech, and even reduce jaw pain related to temporomandibular disorders (TMD).
At Dr. Jelić Clinic, we take an individualized approach, creating treatment plans tailored to each patient’s specific needs and goals.

Types of Orthodontic Appliances
Fixed Braces

A fixed brace is an orthodontic appliance used to correct irregularities in tooth position and bite.
It consists of metal or ceramic brackets bonded to the tooth surface and archwires that connect the brackets, applying pressure to gradually move the teeth into the desired position.

Key components:

  • Brackets: Small metal or ceramic plates attached to the front surface of the teeth using a special dental adhesive. They act as “holders” for the orthodontic wire.
  • Archwires: Flexible metal wires that pass through the brackets and exert pressure on the teeth to move them into alignment. They are periodically replaced during treatment to achieve optimal results.
  • Elastic bands: Used to connect archwires and brackets, keeping them in place. They come in different colors and can be changed for aesthetic preference.
  • Elastic ligatures: Applied to exert additional pressure on certain teeth or groups of teeth for better movement control.

Fixed braces effectively treat various misalignments, including crooked teeth, bad bites, and jaw position issues. The orthodontist customizes each treatment according to the patient’s needs.

How Long Are Fixed Braces Worn?

The duration of treatment depends on the severity of the problem, individual patient needs, and desired results. Typically, fixed braces are worn from 1 to 3 years, though more complex cases may take longer.

Factors that influence duration:

  • Severity of the issue: Complex alignment or bite problems require more time.
  • Patient cooperation: Following instructions and maintaining good oral hygiene significantly affects treatment time.
  • Regular check-ups: Orthodontists must monitor progress and adjust braces as needed.
  • Individual factors: The rate of tooth movement and tissue response can vary.

After treatment, patients usually wear a retainer (fixed or removable) to maintain the achieved alignment. Consistent use is essential for long-term results.

Hygiene With Fixed Braces

Proper hygiene is crucial to prevent plaque buildup, cavities, and gum problems.
Key tips:

  • Brush teeth at least twice daily, ideally after each meal, using a soft toothbrush and fluoride toothpaste.
  • Use interdental brushes or floss to clean between teeth, under wires, and around brackets.
  • Rinse with alcohol-free mouthwash to remove bacteria and freshen the mouth.
  • Avoid sticky or hard foods (gum, hard candy, chewy snacks) that could damage braces.
  • Visit your dentist regularly for check-ups and maintenance.

Good hygiene ensures healthy teeth and gums during orthodontic treatment and prevents complications that could delay progress.

Removable Orthodontic Appliances

Removable appliances can be taken out of the mouth, unlike fixed braces. They are often used in children and adolescents to correct jaw or tooth alignment issues.
These devices provide flexibility and can be adjusted according to the patient’s needs, serving as part of a comprehensive orthodontic treatment plan.
Regular dentist visits and proper appliance use are key to effective results.

When Are Removable Appliances Used?

They are applied in various stages, such as:

  • Before orthodontic treatment: To prepare the mouth and create better conditions for later corrections (e.g., expanders for widening the upper jaw).
  • Before fixed braces: To correct bite or alignment issues before attaching brackets.
  • After fixed braces: As retainers to maintain the new tooth positions.
  • Interim therapy: Between complex treatment phases or as temporary solutions for specific alignment problems.

The timing and use of removable appliances depend on the patient’s needs and the orthodontist’s treatment plan.

Our team of professionals takes care of your smile using modern methods and an individual approach to each patient.
