Pediatric Dentistry

Introduction to Pediatric Dentistry

Pediatric dentistry, or pedodontics, is a specialized branch of dentistry focused on the oral health of children—from infancy through adolescence. The main goal of pediatric dentistry is not only treatment but also prevention of dental issues and education of both parents and children about the importance of proper oral hygiene from the earliest age. It covers dental care for children from birth up to 18 years of age.

Today, great emphasis is placed on children’s overall health through preventive measures such as vaccinations, regular check-ups, proper nutrition, and developmental monitoring. However, while parents often pay close attention to general health, oral health is frequently overlooked—even though it is an integral part of a child’s overall well-being. Unfortunately, many children already have significant dental problems at a young age. Proper chewing is essential for physical and psychological development, and poor oral health can interfere with normal growth.

Diseases of the teeth and gums, as well as jaw and tooth irregularities, often develop silently—without pain or functional loss—until complications such as pain or swelling appear. As the condition progresses, complex functional, aesthetic, and speech problems may occur, making treatment difficult or even impossible. Therefore, in addition to prevention, early diagnosis and timely treatment are crucial for maintaining children’s oral health.

The Importance of the First Dental Visit

Dr. Jelić recommends that a child’s first visit to the dentist should occur as soon as the first tooth appears—or no later than their first birthday. Early prevention and regular check-ups are key to avoiding cavities and other oral diseases.

The main procedures in pediatric dental care include:

  • The first examination during the child’s first year, including an assessment of caries risk for both the child and the mother
  • Preventive procedures such as professional cleaning with fluoride application and dietary counseling
  • Guidance on avoiding harmful habits (e.g., thumb-sucking or prolonged bottle-feeding)
  • Early assessment and treatment of bite or tooth position irregularities using interceptive orthodontics
  • Restorative treatments for cavities
  • Diagnosis of oral conditions associated with systemic diseases (e.g., diabetes, heart defects, asthma, allergies, or blood disorders)
  • Care for soft tissues in the mouth, including ulcers, short frenula, mucoceles, and gum diseases specific to childhood
  • Treatment of dental injuries in both children and adults

Working with children requires patience, constant learning, and genuine care. Dental fear and anxiety are common challenges faced at Dr. Jelić Dent, not only in children but also in adults, often resulting from negative childhood experiences at the dentist.

That’s why a child’s first contact with the dental office must be positive. The best way to ensure this is by bringing the child early—around their first year of life—so the visit can be relaxed and educational for parents. They should leave with practical advice on maintaining their child’s oral health.

From experience, most dental procedures can be performed under local anesthesia. However, strong fear or low pain tolerance—especially in children—may prevent them from cooperating during treatment. Forcing dental procedures on children can have long-term psychological effects and make future treatment difficult or impossible.

Modern dentistry advances through both professional knowledge and technological innovation, which allow for early diagnosis of oral diseases. Dentists aim to identify carious lesions affecting both primary and permanent teeth, on all surfaces—biting, smooth, or root surfaces. Oral pathology can vary widely but always involves one or more of three types of tissues: hard dental tissues, soft tissues, and supporting bone structures. Each tissue type has its own specific diseases and preventive or therapeutic needs.

Proper and timely diagnosis—especially early detection of caries—is essential, as it guarantees the best possible treatment outcomes for every child.

Our team of professionals takes care of your smile using modern methods and an individual approach to each patient.
