What Is Implantology?

Dental implantology is a procedure in which a titanium implant is placed into the jawbone, serving as a replacement for the tooth root. A ceramic crown, bridge, or denture is then attached to the implant, ensuring full functionality and a natural appearance.

Implants Are Used in Three General Cases:

• Single missing tooth – installation of one implant and a crown on it (in this case, there’s no need to grind neighboring teeth to make a bridge).
• Several missing teeth – installation of one or more implants supporting a prosthetic bridge.
• All teeth missing in the jaw – installation of multiple implants that, supported by a bridge or denture, replace all teeth.

Implants also help preserve existing healthy teeth. When a tooth is lost, the neighboring teeth don’t have to be ground down for a bridge — instead, the missing tooth is replaced with an implant, leaving surrounding teeth untouched.

The implantation procedure is not painful and is performed under local anesthesia, just like other oral surgical procedures such as tooth extraction. After implantation, a period follows during which the implant integrates with the bone. The time required before the prosthetic part (crown, bridge, or denture) is placed varies from case to case — from a few weeks up to six months. In the meantime, the patient wears a temporary prosthetic solution.

Almost anyone can receive dental implants. In a small number of cases, implantation may not be possible.
